In 2009, Face and I went to Jolly's birthday party. We were given an early printed copy of HackMaster Basic in a three-ring binder, one that we ended up using in the first Learn-to-Hack sessions that year at Origins. Since then its been on a shelf in my office, still bookmarked with post-it flags. I haven't needed it since the paperback came out or the PDF version I downloaded to my iPad. And now there's the full version, of which I have two hardcover books--the first off the press and the one I ordered ;) --and another PDF. Today I pulled it off the shelf for the first time in a few years because of a big announcement over at Kenzer & Company. HackMaster Basic is now a free PDF.
It's important to note that this free PDF is a complete game. It isn't a demo version or a quick start rules set--its the actual game. Anyone reading this blog knows I play a little bit. ;) If you've been thinking about looking at the game yourself, now you can even if money is a bit tight. Basic will get you through fifth level PCs. It's the engine you need to build your own adventures with. Because the best part of HackMaster is the ability to tell your story. Here's where to start: HackMaster Basic--Free!
